Common mistakes

Small fixes that make the conversation clearer

  • Mixing up Steuer-ID and Steuernummer

Asking for a Steuer-ID when you need a Steuernummer sends the conversation the wrong way. Freelancers need the Steuernummer from the Finanzamt.

  • Expecting personal tax advice at the desk

Staff give general information. Frame questions with grundsätzlich, and take individual decisions to a tax adviser.

  • Ignoring letters you cannot read yet

Deadlines run from the letter, not from when you understood it. Get help reading tax letters quickly.

Common questions

FAQ

Short answers for the questions people ask before this appointment.

What is the difference between the Steuer-ID and the Steuernummer?+

The Steuer-ID is your personal, lifelong number from the Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt). A Steuernummer is issued by your local Finanzamt, for example when you start freelancing.

I lost my Steuer-ID. Can the Finanzamt tell me by phone?+

No. The BZSt does not give the Steuer-ID out by phone. Request it again with the BZSt online form or by letter; it is also on wage tax certificates and tax assessments.

How do I register as a freelancer with the Finanzamt?+

Send the Fragebogen zur steuerlichen Erfassung electronically through ELSTER within one month of starting (§ 138 AO). Paper is only possible on request in hardship cases.

Can the Finanzamt tell me whether to choose the small business rule?+

Staff give general information, not individual advice. For decisions such as the Kleinunternehmerregelung, ask a tax adviser.
